Spatial Concepts
Computational geometry and 5-axis robotic fabrication for an artist's work
Yoram Roth asked me to help materialise a body of work merging photography, sculpture and digital fabrication.
The direction drew on the Italian Spatialists of the 1960s — Fontana, Bonalumi, Castellani — and on Roth’s own investigation into how light behaves across ridges and openings in a surface, and his ambition to make spatial work rather than flat work on a wall.
Translating an artistic intent into geometry
The brief was not a specification. It was a visual intent, and my job was to find the geometric rules that would carry it — ridge depth, aperture rhythm, the angle at which a surface catches light — and hold them consistently across a set of pieces at different scales.
Production
The pieces were fabricated in Corian and PU foam on a 5-axis KUKA robot.
I led production coordination across specialists in digital fabrication, photo retouching, fine-art printing and metal frame fabrication — five disciplines, one set of tolerances, one installation date.
