Afronaut

Volumetric presence through controlled geometry, not added detail

Afronaut explores how form, structure and identity can be carried by geometry alone. Developed to establish a durable design direction for REFRAMD, it pairs expressive surface articulation with strict discipline about proportion and wearability.

Rooted in Afrofuturist references, the collection translates resilience, movement and imagination into a formal language. Each frame is built to feel volumetric and present while staying balanced and comfortable in use.

Design Intent

The collection began with one question: how do you give eyewear a strong sense of presence without adding complexity?

The answer was to refine geometry rather than add elements. Volume comes from curvature and controlled transitions, so the frame reads as substantial without becoming visually heavy.

Afronaut Eclipse

Design Language

Sculpted volumes, controlled transitions, a clear edge hierarchy. Surfaces flow continuously around the lens shape, and concave profiles give each frame its character while the collection holds a shared identity.

Expressive without being arbitrary. Distinctive without ornament.

Constraints

The collection was developed inside real production constraints: minimum wall thickness, manufacturing tolerances, and the integration of standard hardware. Those parameters informed the geometry from the first sketch rather than being checked at the end.

They didn’t limit the design. They gave it a framework — proportion, thickness and transitions defined with more precision than a free hand would have produced.

System & Variations

Expressive design through disciplined control rather than added complexity.

Afronaut is available globally through REFRAMD, online and through retail partners in Milan, Düsseldorf and Amsterdam — the point at which a design exploration became a distributed product.

Outcome

Afronaut demonstrates how expressive design can be achieved through disciplined control rather than added complexity. By focusing on geometry, proportion, and surface transitions, the collection creates a strong visual presence while maintaining clarity and restraint.

The result is a set of frames that balance identity and function, and establish a foundation for future work where form, structure, and product performance are developed together.
