The 030 Collection extends REFRAMD’s product system beyond geometry and fit into color and language. While frame names reference Berlin’s infrastructure, transit systems, and urban structures, the palette draws from the city’s material and cultural landscape.

Rather than assigning names to pre-existing colors, the collection began with contextual references such as Currywurst, Plattenbau, and Spreeufer. These references were then reduced into restrained tonal expressions derived from associated materials, surfaces, atmospheres, and everyday urban conditions found throughout Berlin.

The palette was intentionally developed as a constrained system rather than a series of isolated colorways. Every color is available across every frame in the collection, reinforcing a coherent product architecture where geometry, fit, naming, and CMF operate within the same structured framework.

The result is a collection where color functions not as decoration, but as a contextual extension of the product system itself.

Design Intent

The color naming system was developed to achieve three things:

1. Ground the Collection in Place

Rather than directly reproducing visual landmarks, the palette abstracts Berlin into a set of reduced material and cultural color cues. Public infrastructure, food culture, concrete housing, transit systems, waterways, and urban surfaces were reduced into restrained tones that could operate coherently across the entire collection.

2. Support the Geometry

The colors are designed to reinforce the character of the frames rather than compete with them. The collection prioritises geometry, fit, proportion, and structural clarity, resulting in a palette that remains restrained, functional, and materially grounded. The naming system follows the same logic, drawing from familiar urban references without becoming overly literal or expressive.

Extend the System Beyond Product Form.

The 030 Collection was conceived as a unified product system rather than a series of isolated frames. This structure extends across geometry, fit, naming, color, and product architecture, creating coherence throughout the collection while allowing individual designs and colorways to retain their own character.

Design Philosophy

The collection extends the REFRAMD fit system beyond geometry into color, material expression, and language. Form, fit, and naming operate within a unified framework that balances coherence with variation across the collection

Outcome

The result is a collection where naming becomes part of the product system itself, reinforcing coherence across the collection while allowing individual products to remain distinct without relying on visual excess.

The 030 Collection demonstrates how secondary product attributes such as color naming can contribute to a broader design language when approached with the same level of structure and intentionality as the product itself.
