Mercedes Fragrance
Translating a brand's grille language into a functional perforation system
Mercedes-Benz disperses its custom fragrances inside its cars, and wanted the same experience in its showrooms.
The result is a small series of table diffusers with a reserved design that gives the perfume a stage and sets it off with accented lighting. This was a group project in cooperation with Matmat Studio and Otproduktdesign.
Parametric Pattern Design
My part was the perforation system: outlets that release the fragrance while drawing directly on the grille language of Mercedes cars.
Two constraints at once. The pattern had to read unmistakably as Mercedes, and it had to function as an aperture — enough open area to disperse scent, enough material to hold the form. I built it parametrically so the density and rhythm could be tuned against both without redrawing.
In low light the perforations let light through, giving the object an aura that carries into the showroom around it.
